A small shopping mall and several hotels add to the appeal, drawing thousands of tourists each summer. The local population has divided the beach area into numerous sectors, starting with El Familiar, a family zone, and ending in El Cementerio, the zone where everyone goes to see and be seen. The main town of Viña del Mar is approximately a 10 minute ride away by local bus, car or the “colectivos” (very reasonable taxi’s), and offers a full complement of department stores, supermarkets, high street shops, gyms, excellent night life at the Casino, and various night clubs. To the North of Reñaca the coastline drive offers an eclectic mix of small fishing villages and amazing beaches; from Con-Con with its local fishermen bringing in fresh fish and seafood on a daily basis, and famous for its Empanada (meat pasties) shop, to Zapallar, a secluded bay surrounded by wooded hillsides, and a fantastic sea food restaurant. VALPARAISO Valparaiso is also a short distance round the bay, and the residents of Reñaca and Viña del Mar are often commuters to Valparaiso - about 25 - 20 minutes driving. Valparaiso is one of the oldest ports in South America, and home to the Parliament of Chile, where many British sailors settled during the 19th and 20th Centuries. It has a very bohemian feel to the city, with a great flea/antique market in the square on a weekend, the Naval Museum high up on the hill overlooking the port, the famous (and thrilling) Teleferico lifts taking passengers up and down the steep hills. CENTRAL WINE VALLEYS Within an hour's driving distance from the coast you can reach the secluded Pablo Neruda Museum at Isla Negra, and the central wine regions and vineyards of Valle de Maipo and Casablanca. We would visit Portillo for day trips with no problem at all.
